Canon Ireland recently invited us to Mondello Park to try out the EOS R and the new EOS RP. We put the cameras through their paces doing some flash photography in the museum, and some sport photography out on the track.

We were keen to get some hands-on experience with these models to see how they stacked up with their DSLR equivalents. We started by using the RP and the R in the museum where we got to shoot Eddie Irvine’s Jordan car, we set up 3 Speedlites around the car and put our cameras to 1/500 sec;   f/5.6;   ISO 400 in order to eliminate the ambient light and focus on the car.

What struck us straight away was the colour rendition in both cameras. The reds really popped and the sheen of the car was replicated well in-camera. The R offered more detail in the shadows, but both cameras created excellent shots. The usability of the fully articulating screen was also extremely beneficial to get the shot of the car.

Out on the track we put the RP back in our bag and used the R against a 5D Mark IV, using the 5D with EF 70-200mm f2.8 III lens and the R with the RF24-105mm F4 L IS USM. Setting the EOS 5D MIV to 1/64 sec;   f/16;   ISO 125 and the EOS R to 1/40 sec;   f/20;   ISO 100, we undertook some panning shots. What was immediately evident with the R was the accuracy, speed and number of options available for focusing. Using the screen as a touch and drag focus pad was particularly useful in this situation.

We found both cameras to have a lovely feel in the hand, to be very useful and fast in terms of focusing, and to have a stunning colour rendition. Check out the video to see our full thoughts…
